This National Manufacturing Day, we’re proud to open the doors of our Hitchin head office and celebrate the people, skills and expertise behind the specialist fire detection solutions we manufacture. As part of Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day, the event gives us an opportunity not only to showcase our products, but also to highlight the wide range of people and careers that make modern manufacturing possible.
Fire detection solutions manufactured in Hitchin
From our headquarters in Hitchin, our manufacturing team produces specialist fire detection technology designed to help protect lives, livelihoods and assets. This includes our Fireray Beam Detectors, which provide optical beam smoke detection, and our Talentum Flame Detectors.
For FFE Operations Director, Ruth Bamber, National Manufacturing Day is an opportunity to recognise the expertise behind these products. “We’re really passionate about our manufacturing team. They are a fantastic team who put a lot of effort into making high-quality detection systems.” - Ruth.
The people behind UK manufacturing
Bringing a product to market requires expertise from across the business. That means people working across manufacturing, engineering, procurement, product management, sales and marketing all play their part.
For National Manufacturing Day, we’re bringing colleagues from these different areas together to share what they do and demonstrate how different roles contribute to getting the right products into the market. It’s also an opportunity for colleagues to learn more about the skills and processes taking place across FFE every day.

Inspiring the next generation of engineers
National Manufacturing Day is also about looking ahead. Over the past 12 months, FFE has worked with university students through projects and paid internships, helping give the next generation of engineers experience of working with a UK manufacturer. We’ve also welcomed local school students into FFE, giving some their first opportunity to experience a manufacturing environment.
As Ruth explains “We’re really passionate about bringing on the next generation of engineers.”
By opening our doors and sharing the variety of roles available, we want to help young people see that modern manufacturing offers opportunities across much more than engineering alone.
