Types of Aspirating Smoke Detectors
An aspirating smoke detector (ASD) is a fire detection system that uses an aspirator to continuously sample air from the protected area via a network of pipes. The air is then analysed in a highly sensitive detection chamber, allowing the system to identify minute smoke particles at incipient fire stages.
Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASD)
An aspirating smoke detector (ASD) is a highly sensitive fire detection system that continuously draws in air samples from the protected area through a network of pipes. The air is passed through a detection chamber, where sophisticated sensors check for even the smallest traces of smoke. Unlike traditional spot detectors that wait for smoke to reach them, ASDs actively “sample” the environment, making them capable of detecting fires at a very early, often invisible stage. They are commonly used in mission-critical or challenging environments such as data centres, clean rooms, cold stores, and warehouses—where fast, reliable detection and reduced false alarms are essential.
Projected Beam Smoke Detectors
Projected Optical Beam Smoke Detectors use separate Transmitter and Receiver units installed at opposite ends of the protected area, up to 100 metres apart, with the Receiver connected to a ground-level Control Unit. This configuration is less affected by stray reflections, allowing reliable operation in narrower or more complex environments. Compact and architecturally adaptable, these detectors are well-suited to spaces where aesthetics and precision matter.
Cabinet Smoke Detectors (CSD)
A cabinet smoke detector takes aspirating detection a step further by protecting equipment right at the source. Unlike room-level detectors that only sense smoke once it escapes into the wider environment, a cabinet unit draws air samples directly from inside electrical or server cabinets. This means it can identify overheating or smouldering components long before room sensors would react. For installers and operators, it offers targeted protection, faster warning times, and peace of mind that critical assets are safeguarded without adding complexity to the wider fire system.
